Eleven residents from five families living near the Pinnelanda mountain area at Maladola, Haldummulla were evacuated to safety yesterday (20) after a massive rock formation atop the mountain began to crack and break away, Haldummulla Police said.

Police stated that although secure shelter had been arranged for the affected families at the Maladola Viharaya as a precautionary measure, the residents declined the facility and instead opted to stay temporarily with relatives and friends in the area.

Haldummulla OIC, Inspector Ashoka Indunil said the continuing rainy weather had contributed to the instability of the rock formation, adding that several large boulders had already broken off and scattered down the slope, posing a serious threat to households nearby.

Dry rations are being distributed to the evacuated families. Further investigations are
being conducted, with the Haldummulla Police closely monitoring the situation.
