RPC estate workers’ wages scale up from January
Sri Lanka’s tea plantation companies will be supported by the government in increasing wages of estate workers commencing with the January payment due on February 10.
Industry spokesperson Dr. Roshan Rajadurai speaking with the Sunday Times Business said that commencing with the January wages the Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs) will pay the increased wages per day amounting to Rs.200 from the companies and Rs. 200 from the government to estate workers.
Accordingly, the Estate Managers will at the end of January certify the work carried out by the workers and send the required forms to the Plantation Ministry.
This will then be processed by the Ministry and the required payment scheduled for the workers will be deposited to the respective RPCs.
It will then be paid to the workers along with the salaries given by the RPCs, Dr. Rajadurai said. This will commence from February 10, he said.
There are around 87,000 estate workers employed by the RPCs but the concern in this payment model is that those workers provided employment by the smallholders will not receive this additional government payment.
The authorities have been clear of the fact that the smallholder estate owners will not be provided this additional payment made by the government.
It is assumed that workers given work on smallholder estates earn more than what RPC workers earn.
Plantations Minister Samantha Vidyaratna said that estate workers registered with the authorities which include the Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs) and those working on the state-run plantations namely the Janatha Estate Development Board (JEDB) and the Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation (SLSPC) will be paid the daily attendance incentive of Rs.200 by the government.
The minister also said that the smallholder plantation workers are not paid the incentive since they are already paid a higher wage compared to the payment on the RPC estates.
