Apparel industry back on track after crisis
View(s):Sri Lanka’s apparel industry is fully back to work in all but a handful of plants where the flood damage was significant. Those plants are mainly from larger groups and the process of replacing machinery has begun, according to an update issued by the Joint Apparel Association Forum Sri Lanka (JAAF) on the status of the industry.
It said temporary measures are in place to replace lost capacity and whilst this may see a reduction in shipments in December, this would be probably for that month only.
“The challenge that remains is around our people and their communities. A number of employees still remain in temporary housing post the cyclone. JAAF is coordinating with its member facilities across the country to ensure that we have the details of employees who have had their homes damaged or destroyed and are working with the Ministry of Industries and the relevant Divisional Secretariats to ensure that relief is coordinated with the state,” the statement said.
In the short-term relief is being provided through assistance for alternate accommodation, replacement of bedding, electrical items, clothing etc so that those affected can get back into economic activity. Financial support from the state is also reaching those affected and here too companies are working with the local authorities to support the relief efforts. Teams from the factories are independently working on the ground to assess the level of damage to houses and see whether rebuilding is possible.
