Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has great expectations from the government in boosting arrivals to the country as hotels carry out their own campaigns to attract more travellers amidst some cancellations.

Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) President Nalin Jayasundere said approval has been given to the Tourism Promotion Bureau to launch a campaign to send out the message that “Sri Lanka is ready” as the country is “rapidly becoming normal”. The campaign scheduled to be launched most likely this week will highlight the possibility for travellers to visit their favourite tourist attractions and also enjoy their holiday.

Moreover, he said they have spoken with the Travel Agents Association of India and have been assured of their support in generating travellers to Sri Lanka.

In the first phase of the campaign travellers from the top 10 markets will be targeted through a digital marketing campaign to promote Sri Lanka as a destination ready to welcome its visitors.Mr. Jayasundere said tourists can come to Sri Lanka and enjoy their stay and that is what they hope to inform the travellers, after Ditwah Cyclone caused concern among visitors.

Kandy Hoteliers Association President Rodney Armstrong told the Sunday Times Business that most hotels in Kandy are receiving considerable occupancy. While Kandy hotels are receiving a larger number of tourists staying in their hotels those travelling to Nuwara Eliya have dropped largely, due to adverse conditions prevailing in the area in the aftermath of the cyclone.

Mr. Armstrong said they had no shortage of staff and that though initially their staff was unable to come to work, by December 4 they were back at work.

He said during the cyclone not a single tourist was affected and except for a group that was stranded no one else was impacted.

“Social media is doing a lot of negative publicity,” he said adding that while a French group scheduled is going ahead with their plans to visit the country some others have opted to cancel towards the end of December.

Boost to MICE tourism
Sri Lanka’s MICE tourism segment was largely untouched by Cyclone Ditwah thought there were some postponements in other areas of tourism.

Officials said that on the day Cyclone Ditwah hit Sri Lanka (Friday -November 28, a group of 460 travellers from India arrived in the country for a conference pertaining to the pharmaceutical industry.  A group of 550 visitors came from India for a 3-4 day meeting this month on insurance.

The Mrs. India pageant on December 6 drew 280 guests while there was a mixed group of 600 Indian and Australian visitors for a conference on AI/IT. On December 9, 150 guests came from India for an Asian Paints incentive visit while 50 visitors from India were due on Saturday December 13 for another conference.
