‘iNaturalist’ is an app and a website to record observations of wild organisms supported by photographs. The software is capable of suggesting identifications, while identifications are also made by knowledgeable users.
Dr Wijesinghe has been identifying organisms in Sri Lanka and elsewhere for many years. He has been called a zoologist, entomologist, arachnologist and urban botanist but he considers himself a naturalist. He has a BSc in Zoology from the University of London, UK, and a PhD in Biology from the City University of New York (CUNY), USA. He had worked as an Assistant Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Ruhuna and later as the Entomologist of the Department of National Museums. Now he teaches biology at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY.
The online lecture demonstration on ‘What is iNaturalist?’ is organised by the Natural History Society of Sri Lanka.
