International players discussing setting up data centres

At least half a dozen international players are in discussions with the Government for numerous services, including data centres and cost-saving power solutions, top officials said.

Amazon, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, Huawei and Alibaba are reportedly in discussions with the Ministry of Digital Economy and relevant agencies regarding the establishment of these facilities amongst a host of other solutions.

At a recent digital forum, Eranga Weeraratna, Deputy Minister -Digital Economy, told the audience that the government is inviting global data centre providers to set up in Sri Lanka.

He said that the government is inviting both local and international partners to invest in AI cloud platforms within Sri Lanka.

“We are in discussions currently to see how we can bring down such AI and the data centre providers to come to Sri Lanka and set up AI cloud platforms for the government use as well as for the local private sector requirements,” he said. Constructing a secure and robust cloud infrastructure and protecting national data through local storage and governance are primary goals of the government’s draft Cloud Policy and Strategy.

Sri Lanka aims to enhance its cloud infrastructure by integrating local providers with global hyperscalers, targeting to establish a next-generation cloud ecosystem. Cost efficiency, security, and innovation, he said, are the main advantages of hyperscale public clouds.

A telco analyst noted that at least 20 megawatts are required for a tier one data centre.

Oracle Cloud is being implemented in specific projects, such as the migration of the Board of Investment (BOI) systems to Oracle Cloud infrastructure. In February, the government invited Oracle to establish a sovereign cloud region in Sri Lanka, which would host government applications and drive digital transformation initiatives.
