CEB battery storage system offer sparks 35 + applications
More than 35 power companies have applied for the first-time tender issued on October 14 for a battery energy storage system on a build-operate-transfer basis for 16 projects by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), top sources said.
Fentons, Hayleys, DIMO, WindForce, Resus Power, W KV, Hydrotech, Pyramid Wilmar, Green Power Energy management and Panasian Power were amongst the participants.
These companies will be installing batteries from companies such as Huawei, Sungrow, CATL, Trina, Hithium, and Gymco brands. The CEB called for expressions of interest for 160MW of battery energy systems across multiple locations. The shortlisted candidates will need to find locations, according to the substations distributed to them by the CEB.
Sources said that WindForce and Hydrotech were among the lowest bidders. WindForce had bid for 13 projects at a low price, while Hydrotech had bid for the balance three. Bidders are currently awaiting the technical evaluation. Last May, Access Solar announced a partnership with Jinko Solar for utility-scale, commercial, industrial and residential (BESS) applications. Energy industry sources opined that the CEB recognised that the country needs battery energy storage systems (BESS) primarily to manage the intermittency of its growing renewable energy sources like solar and wind, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply. BESS allows the country to store excess renewable energy generated during peak production times and release it during high-demand periods, which also reduces reliance on costly fossil fuels and prevents grid destabilisation caused by fluctuating supply. These systems are crucial for meeting the goal of increasing renewable energy to 40 per cent by 2030, improving power quality, and preventing costly power outages for businesses and households. The CEB’s existing large hydro plants can engage a certain amount of solar power by reducing their daytime use but to support system stability, rotating generators are needed.
Non-conventional renewable energy also has other problems, such as the lack of reactive power.
