When Camerati takes the stage at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on September 30, it won’t just be another concert. For the close-knit vocal ensemble, Mixtape is both a milestone and a dream realised — the culmination of years of music-making, friendship and shared passion. What began as a group of friends singing together in 2013 has now evolved into an ensemble known for its rich harmonies, diverse repertoire and a spirit rooted in camaraderie – the very meaning behind the name, Camerati.

While the group has performed in many different venues, including the Russian Cultural Centre and Sooriya Village, Mixtape marks a momentous occasion. Performing their own show at the Lionel Wendt has long been on the bucket list due to the venue being regarded almost as a rite of passage for many performers. “Performing at the Lionel Wendt was always the dream,” says Yanitra Kumaraguru. “We’ve been wanting to do that for so long, and it’s taken us long enough to build up to the Wendt because that has been like home for all of us.”

True to its name, Mixtape reflects the group’s eclectic repertoire, blending genres and styles. From barbershop arrangements and gospel to pop and musical theatre, the show is designed to appeal to everyone, with songs by Coldplay and Michael Jackson, alongside favourites from The Lion King. “We wanted to capture the diversity of what we love to sing,” says Sherene Vas. “It’s a chance for the audience to see all the different sides of Camerati.”

The concert will also feature long-time supporters and friends of the ensemble, who, over the years, have become extended family. Affectionately known as the Cameratos, this collective will join the ensemble on several items, as will The Old Joes’ Choir, bringing in their dynamic energy to complement Camerati’s own style.

The timing of this concert adds to the significance. After the pandemic forced them to scale back to smaller services and performances, Mixtape marks Camerati’s return to a full-scale concert; a chance to reconnect with one another – and with audiences.

Camerati’s story goes back to the Merry-An Singers, the choir where many of the members first trained under the renowned Mary Anne David. When careers and family drew them away over a decade ago, they found themselves missing not just the music but also the joy of singing together.

Even casual meet-ups over dinner or coffee would turn into impromptu jam sessions. “We’d meet for dinner or a movie, and even in the car, we’d break into harmonies,” recalls Priyadarshini de Mel. “It sounded so good that we thought – why not make something of this?”

Their first performance came almost by chance, when Neomi Muthukuda recommended they sing at a corporate event. “I was in a meeting for a big dealer conference, and they were talking about what to do about the entertainment,” says Neomi. “I suggested the group – we didn’t even have a name.” With no name, but plenty of passion, Camerati was born.

Officially performing from 2013, the ensemble first made their mark at church weddings and small gigs. Since then, Camerati has gained international recognition, winning gold and championship titles in both Gospel and Acapella categories at the 2016 Lanna International Choir Competition in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The group has since continued to expand its presence with concerts, anniversary celebrations and Christmas performances. Each event has allowed Camerati to refine its identity while staying true to its roots. For new members like Tasha Hettiarachchi, the welcome has been warm. “It’s like a group of friends doing what we love. Everyone has their own work, but this brings us together. It’s been good to be here.”

Camerati is also setting its sights beyond Sri Lanka, aiming to participate in upcoming competitions. For now though, the focus is firmly on giving audiences an evening to remember. “You won’t be disappointed,” promises Tasha. “This concert is for everyone who loves music as much as we do.”

Part concert, part celebration, Mixtape is set to leave audiences with what Camerati has held onto all along – the joy of singing together.

Mixtape will take place on September 30 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7.30 p.m. Reserve your tickets via WhatsApp at 0740496619.
