The third Nyéléni Global Forum, which brought together the world’s largest gathering of grassroot movements to discuss food sovereignty and agroecology among others, took place in Polgolla, Kandy, this week.
Around 1,000 people attended the opening event, held at the National Institute of Co-Operative Development. Ministers Wasantha Samarasinghe and Samantha Vidyaratne said the government was looking at cooperative development and food security, and pledged support to the objectives of the forum.
Representatives from six regions and global organisations spoke of the important issues in relation to the forum and its goal.
The event brought together farmers, indigenous peoples, fisherfolk, pastoralists, workers, feminist movements, environmentalists, the urban food insecure, consumer groups and researchers.
This third edition follows the Nyéléni Forums in Mali (2007, 2015) and seeks to build momentum towards systemic transformation from the grassroots.
