A digitalisation programme of the Supreme Court and the launch of its revamped website took place on Friday.

It is a step to accelerate the digitalisation of the judicial system, which aims to increase the efficiency of judicial services.

The launch of the Supreme Court Case Management System and the launch of the revamped Supreme Court website as the first phase of the e-court project was presided over by Chief Justice Prithi Padman Surasena.

The event was held at the premises of the Judges Training Institute, No 80, Judicial Mawatha, Colombo 12, with the participation of Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara.

Supreme Court Judge Mahinda Samayawardena, Member of the Judicial Service Commission and Supreme Court Justice S Thurairajah were also present.

The aim of the digitalisation program is to minimise corruption and irregularities in court offices, increase public confidence in the judiciary, and provide the public and lawyers who visit the courts with the convenience of obtaining services promptly, the Justice Ministry said.

As a first step, the Supreme Court’s proceedings are to be digitised, followed by the Court of Appeal, High Courts, District Magistrate’s Courts and other judicial proceedings.

The facility to pay all court fines, case fees, stamp fees, and certificate copy fees through bank cards was recently introduced to the court system, and payment machines were also distributed to several courts around Colombo.

Attorney General, President’s Counsel, Parinda Ranasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, President’s Counsel, Ayesha Jinasena, Supreme Court Registrar Aravinda Gunaratne, President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, attorney-at-law, Rajiv Amarasuriya were present.
