The death toll from the Ella–Wellawaya bus tragedy rose to 16 on Friday, after a 43‑year‑old woman succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Badulla Teaching Hospital.

The victim was identified as Namali Gamage, an employee of the Tangalle Urban Council.

The tragedy occurred last Thursday night, when a bus carrying about 31 people veered off the road and plunged into a thousand‑foot precipice after colliding with an SUV travelling in the opposite direction.
