New system to regulate school transfers
View(s):- Even private school students will be able to gain admission in state schools
Private school students will be able to transfer to government schools under a new system designed to offer admission opportunities in intermediate grades other than Grades 5 and 6, according to a Cabinet proposal.
The new system will also limit intermediate grade admission to a certain period of the year, unlike the existing system where students are admitted throughout the year, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne said.
University lecturers will also have the opportunity to have their children admitted to a school closest to their place of work while they serve in a particular higher education institution, he said.
This week, the Cabinet approved the proposal presented by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as Education and Higher Education Minister to issue a circular to implement the new system.
The new system is based on the recommendations of a Cabinet Sub-Committee appointed by the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Studies.
The new system, while allowing students to apply for entry to another school, gives priority to those with a justifiable reason for transferring to a different school for intermediate grades.
The existing circular dealing with intermediate grade transfers will be repealed. (DW)
