Dos and Don’ts for Resumes in 2025: Tips from Industry Experts

“Please, I need a job… Can you help me?” is the question Nazran Baba, Founder of Your Writer, hears most often at career events. With five years of experience helping hundreds of clients globally, Nazran has seen firsthand what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to resumes in 2025. Ahead of the free resume review clinic at the EDEX Expo, he shares actionable advice for students and professionals to improve their career presentation.

Why Resumes Fail

A resume is a business marketing document, not a literary masterpiece, explains Nazran. Despite this, many fail due to three main issues: weak first impressions resulting from missing experience summaries or flashy designs; dense, poorly structured content with long bullet points or text blocks; and a lack of clarity or authenticity, including misrepresented achievements or generic AI-generated phrasing.

Dos for a Winning Resume

Clear, concise, and truthful information is key. “Start your resume with an executive summary that states your years of experience, such as “5+ years” or “12+ years,” to set a professional tone immediately, says Nazran. Keep bullet points short – 1 or 2 sentences max.

Nazran recommends that employees highlight real contributions and use numbers. For example, if you supported a large project, call out its scale – “Supported a $3M contract by coordinating schedules, tracking deliverables, and ensuring timely communication between teams.” If you worked in a team but never directly supervised, phrase it like: “Collaborated with a cross-functional team of 7 to complete a mobile application project.” Explain your role in a way that highlights impact.

Don’ts for Resumes in 2025

Avoid including headshots, full home addresses, and other personal details such as your marital status, full date of birth, etc. Skip dense paragraphs under each role. Don’t include skill ratings, charts, or flashy graphics; plain and professional is more effective.

Expert Insights

AI tools can accelerate resume writing, but Baba cautions against relying entirely on them: “AI resumes often have subtle giveaways in syntax, punctuation, and phrasing. Recruiters notice, and it can make applications feel generic.” Timing is also crucial. Applying early gives you an advantage, as waiting until the deadline may put you behind thousands of applicants.

To help students and professionals craft resumes that open doors, Your Writer by Nazran Baba will be offering free resume reviews at the EDEX Expo 2025.
