The inaugural session of the student Parliament of MDH Jayawardhana College, Battaramulla, was held recently at the college main hall, under the patronage of the Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera.

The programme was organised jointly by the school and the Communication Department of Parliament with the objective of bringing the values of democracy closer to schoolchildren and providing them with practical experiences regarding parliamentary procedure. The Zonal Education Director of Sri Jayewardenepura, Samanmali Dinamuni, also participated in this initiative.

Ms. Rohanadeera elaborated on the parliamentary process and its functions and made the students aware of the way in which Parliament operates. She suggested that in order to better reflect the structure of the real Parliament within the student Parliament, in addition to government members, a group representing the opposition should also be appointed. She added that through this, children would be able to gain a deeper understanding of democratic values.

Thereafter, the inaugural session of the student parliament began with the election of the Speaker. Thereafter, the Prime Minister, along with the Cabinet of Ministers and Members of Parliament, took oaths. Subsequently, each minister of the student parliament presented to the assembly the proposed future plans to be implemented through their respective ministries.

During this session, official badges were also conferred on the student representatives of Parliament, with the participation of Ms. Rohanadeera.

Expressing her views on this occasion, Samanmali Dinamuni, Zonal Director of Education of Sri Jayewardenepura, stated that such student parliaments should not be allowed to lapse into an inactive state but should be maintained in a more
active manner so that children could effectively gain values that would be useful for their lives.

Wasana Hettiarachchi, Deputy Director of Education (Social Sciences) of Sri Jayewardenepura Zone; Vijitha Lakshmi Liyanage, Principal of MDH Jayawardhana College; and R.C. Iddamalgoda, Deputy Principal, together with members of the academic staff, students, and parents, also participated in this session.
