INFOTEL sparks interest in digitalisation efforts

The National Cyber Security Operations Centre (NCOC), which will detect real-time threats and monitor them, will be operationalised soon, a top official said.

The NCOC, established with the support of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and the Ministry of Digital Economy, plays a pivotal role in this initiative operating, 24/7, providing monitoring, threat detection, and rapid response to cyber incidents. “This is a paramount need when introducing digital services,” Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne told The Sunday Times Business. “Real-time threats are out there, and we need to monitor them in real time. For that, we need sophisticated software and a dedicated operations centre for cyber security monitoring,” he added. Established with the support of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Centre will issue early warnings regarding malware and unauthorised access, enabling institutions to mitigate risks and respond effectively to potential breaches.

He also noted the government’s efforts to intensify its digitalisation efforts through a 100-day programme, focusing on enhancing online services, streamlining payment systems, and promoting digital literacy. This month has also been designated as the Digital Month, he added, noting that the goal is to get the entire island interested about this process over the next 100 days.

Noting that ICT is no longer an option, he commended exhibitions like INFOTEL for fostering awareness, highlighting innovation, attracting foreign investment, and inspiring future digital leaders. The INFOTEL, scheduled for November 7-9 at BMICH, has seen progress since its inception 30 years ago, he said.

The organisers, the Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka, stated that this year’s edition will feature over 300 exhibitors, marking the largest to date. Sectors such as Fintech, AI, robotics, and gaming will be featured this year, with the introduction of the country’s full-scale E-Sports championship, offering a Rs. 2 million prize pool across nine gaming titles.
