Panchali claims her first double crown at NCPBA Open Badminton Championships 2025
View(s):Panchali Adhikari claimed a double crown as major upsets occurred at the North Central Province Badminton Association (NCPBA) All-Island Open Badminton Championships 2025, which concluded at the Sports Department Indoor Stadium in Anuradhapura. Panchali claimed the Women’s Open Singles as well as the Mixed Open Doubles while favourites collapsed at the seven-day NCPBA Open giving her the first major achievement in a national level competition.
Panchali won the Women’s Open Singles beating Vidara Vidanage in a final that stretched to the wire by 2-1 and went on to pocket the Mixed Open Doubles, partnering with Thulith Palliyaguru for her double crown. Aashinsa Herath won the Men’s Open Singles comfortably following a straight win against Thilina Rajakaruna while Raihan Gusyaputra and David Homer paired up to beat Oshamika Karunaratne and Thulith Palliyaguru in the Men’s Open Doubles.

In an absorbing Women’s Open Doubles final Anurangi Masakorala/Praveena Wijesundara sustained their grit to overcome Sanadhi de Silva and Vidara Vidanage while Panchali Adhikari partnered with Thulith Palliyaguru to beat Madhuka Dulanjana and Anurangi Masakorala in a stiff contest to win the Mixed Open Doubles and claim her double crown.
Mihila Jayaweera won a double crown in the Under-19 category, claiming the Boy’s Singles and Doubles titles. He faced a stiff competition in the Boy’s U-19 Singles final before beating Thisath Rupathunga 2-1 and went on to claim his double crown with the win of the Boys’ Doubles partnering with Thejana Herath. Dulanya Karunaratne beat Thisuri Gunawardena after a close battle to win the Girl’s U-19 Singles, while Sandathi Dewmini and Pawani Induwari enjoyed an easy win against Thiseja Herath and Komuthu Kumarapperuma on their way to claim the Girls’ Doubles title.
Pamudu Randiligama claimed a double crown in the Under-17 age category, winning the Singles and Doubles titles. He beat Samiru Ranasinghe in the Boy’s Singles after a close shave after recording an easy win the Doubles title partnering with Samiru Ranasinghe. Benuri Vipulaguna recorded an easy win against Yenuri Nethsara to claim the Girl’s Singles title while Fathima Amani and Yenuri Nethsara recovered to overcome Kenuli Kumaranayake and Kithsara Ranatunga to win the Girl’s Doubles title.
Rashmi Herath secured a double crown in the Under-15s category, winning the Girl’s Singles and Girls’ Doubles titles. She beat Sayumi de Silva in straight sets to claim the Girl’s Singles title, and partnered with Sanumi Methnara to record a straight win against Sayumi and Ranuli Weerapperuma and claim the Girls’ Double title. Yasiru Jayawardana defeated Dasindu Peiris in straight sets to win the Boy’s Singles title while Udan Abinindu and Dasindu Peiris teamed up to beat Harindu Damsara and Sanuth Palangasinghe claim the Boys’ Doubles title.
A combined prize money of Rs.750,000 for all events based on the number of entries were on offer, in addition to trophies, medals and certificates awarded for winners, runners-up and semi-finalists of each event of the tournament. Junior winners received appropriate gifts instead of prize money, according to the decision taken by the tournament organisers.
Organised by the Northern Central Province Badminton Association, the seven-day event is ratified as a National Ranking Level 1 competition sanctioned by Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB). The tournament was sponsored by McFoil, Mobil, Li Ning, 3M and GAC.
