The silver screen welcomes a heartfelt story of love, sacrifice and resilience with the release of television director Anusha Sanjeewa Edirimuni’s maiden cinematic venture ‘Mother Lanka’. The film, scripted by Krishanthi Kulasuriya and produced by Ishan Perera, narrates the life of a national athletic champion, who gives up her sporting career for the sake of motherhood.
Anusha, a professionally qualified film and television director and producer, is best known as a founding member of Swarnavahini, where he worked for nearly fifteen years as Director, Producer and Executive Producer. With more than 25 years of experience in media, including work as a promoter and marketer, he brings both depth and professionalism to his debut film. One of his career highlights was the successful promotion campaign of the acclaimed film ‘Colombo’, which won over Sri Lankan audiences during the post-pandemic crisis in the local film industry.
At the heart of the new film is ‘Shalu’, a nationally celebrated athlete, whose youthful romance ends in heartbreak, leaving her to face life as a single mother. Choosing to embrace the strength of motherhood, she protects the legacy of her love while navigating life’s struggles. Along the way, a companion who shares her courage and determination joins her and together they embark on a journey to raise a victorious young girl.
Producer Ishan Perera, a well-known entrepreneur in the printing industry, sees cinema as a tool for change. ‘This film is a gift for my mother and all the mothers in Sri Lanka’ Perera told the media, emphasising his belief that movies can influence attitudes, knowledge, and behaviour to drive positive social change. Beyond film, Perera has long been involved in charitable initiatives, particularly in uplifting rural communities and supporting underprivileged children in the North and East.
The film’s star-studded cast includes Tharindi Fernando, Dhananjaya Siriwardhana, Shenuki Disalya, Bimal Jayakody, Heshani Liyandipita, Sanath Gunathilaka, Dilhani Ekanayaka, Nuwan Gunasekara, Kalana Gunasekara, Navindi Rupiah and Vichintha Ilangakoon, promising powerful performances to bring this emotional story to life.
Currently screening in cinemas, the film offers audiences an inspiring tale that celebrates the strength of women and the enduring spirit of motherhood—a tribute to mothers everywhere.
