Tea Avenue expands to India, aiming at 100 outlets
View(s):Family-led Tea Avenue, a gourmet tea café, is expanding into India through a partnership with FranGlobal (international arm of Franchise India Group).
After an agreement clinching the deal last week in Colombo, Gaurav Marya, Chairman, Franchise India, told reporters that his company which operates in many countries plans to open 100 Tea Avenue stores across India as franchise outlets. It will initially open in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore followed by other cities and will be set up as flagship cafés, kiosks, in-hotel tea stations while discussions are underway with airport operators to launch units in Indian airports.

Tea Avenue is part of Empire Teas, one of Sri Lanka’s top five tea exporters, set up in 1936 by the De Silva family. Sajeev de Silva, Founder & Managing Director, Tea Avenue, a third generation De Silva whose grandfather started Empire Teas, said they plan to take the Tea Avenue brand across the world starting with India which has a large domestic market owing to the population. “India is the stepping stone. We want to offer a good cup of tea, compete with the coffee culture and promote tea as a favoured drink with many health benefits,” he said.
Tea Avenue has five outlets and one franchise unit in Sri Lanka and plans to open 30 franchise outlets here in the next five years. “We are also targeting outlets in Dubai, the UK and Shanghai,” he said. Its goal is to establish 200+ outlets by 2035, with India as a cornerstone. Parent company Empire Teas sources all its single origin tea supply from the Colombo Tea Auction.
