Sri Lanka’s number portability, allowing subscribers to switch networks using the same number, will be ready by August next year, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne said.

This facility, which has been discussed for more than a decade, is finally coming into fruition. Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Chairman the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) said that the TRCSL is actively addressing public inquiries regarding the implementation of Number Portability (NP) service. “To facilitate this, the Commission has engaged in discussions with telecom operators to devise a comprehensive plan for NP service implementation,” Mr. Dhanapala told The Sunday Times Business.

Telecom industry officials said that there are more than 40 towers to be erected in this regard. “Depending on the network capability of the telecom operators in the country, they need to be ready. That will take about six months. Then the TRCSL will ask service providers to operationalise this process, which will also take about six months,” a telco industry official told the Sunday Times Business.

In 2021, a Public Consultation Paper was released to collect insights from relevant stakeholders, which informed the decision-making process. Following this, a suitable technical model was launched in collaboration with telecom operators. A dedicated entity, Lanka Number Portability Services (Guarantee) Ltd (LNPS), was formed, comprising all fixed and mobile operators, to oversee the operation and administration of the NP service.

The Attorney General’s Department has approved the NP Rules and Guidelines, developed in collaboration with telecom operators, the TRCSL said recently.

The operator consortium has successfully selected a vendor for the NP system, and once the installation of the system and necessary upgrades to operators’ networks are completed, the NP service is anticipated to commence.
