Hameed Al Husseinie and Zahira clash in inaugural Heritage Derby
Two of the most renowned football powerhouses among schools. Hameed Al-Husseinie College and Zahira College, will battle for honours in the inaugural Heritage Derby football encounter to be played at the Racecourse ground today evening. This encounter is organised for the first time by the Hameed Al-Husseini College Old Boys’ Association to mark the 140th anniversary of the school.
Both schools have been excelling in school football for the past five decades and have been described as the kings of schools football, as the inaugural encounter is expected to be a thrilling and exciting one from the first to the final whistle of the game. At present, many players from these two schools have been selected for the junior national squads.
This year, Mohamed Baslan will lead Hameed Al-Husseinie while Fareeq Ahmed leads Zahira. Three players from Zahira, namely Aaqib Amanulla, Abdul Aziz and Fareeq Ahamed are sons of former national players Mohammed Amanulla, Aliyar and Fasrul Rahuman respectively. Amanulla emerged as the hero in the SAFF Championship 1995, where Sri Lanka became the champions. The Heritage Derby is expected to become the annual the big match in football with Zahira to play hosts next year.
