Benedictine Dinesh sets world record in 50m Freestyle swimming
View(s):In an extraordinary display of talent and determination, Dinesh Headhaav, a student of St. Benedict’s College, Colombo, etched his name into the record books by setting a new world record in the 50-metre Freestyle swimming event for the Under-6 age category. Dinesh Headhaav completed the distance in an astonishing 49 seconds, breaking the previous record of 1 minute and 6 seconds, which was held by a young swimmer from the United Arab Emirates.

The achievement has been officially recognised by the Cholan Book of World Records (CBWR), an international body that celebrates outstanding talent across various disciplines. To mark this proud moment, a special ceremony was held at the college, attended by a distinguished gathering. The event was presided over by the Director (Acting) of St. Benedict’s, along with key representatives from the CBWR Sri Lanka Branch, including Capt. (Rtd) Indranath Perera, its General Secretary, and Sri Nagawani Rajah, the Vice President.
Also in attendance were the Master-in-Charge and Assistant Masters of the St. Benedict’s College Aquatic Sports Centre, swimming coaches, teachers, and members of the Old Bens Sports Club, including its President. Dinesh was well backed by his parents, who granted their continuous support and encouragement while the College Aquatic Squad Organising Committee coordinated the memorable and motivational event. This young swimmer’s remarkable feat not only brings pride to St. Benedict’s College but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the nation.
