Vacancies in ministry, institutes disrupting education: Report
View(s):Several vacancies in the Education Ministry and education institutions under it have created disruptions within the education sector.
According to information provided by the Auditor General’s Department in the Education Ministry’s 2024 Performance Report, there were 880 vacancies of senior and tertiary level officers and 2,418 vacancies of secondary and primary level officers within the ministry.
There were 544 senior-level vacancies, 26 tertiary-level vacancies, 262 secondary-level vacancies and 106 primary-level vacancies in the National Colleges of Education (NCoEs). Despite these vacancies, the ministry did not include them in the expected recruitment plan for 2025, nor was any review conducted regarding the approved number of vacancies for these positions, according to the Auditor General’s observations.
Furthermore, according to detailed staff information related to National Education Institutes, the approved number of lecturer positions in the Sri Lanka Teacher Education Service was 1,080. However, as of April 30, the actual number of filled positions was observed to be 539, resulting in a vacancy of 541 lecturer positions. It was also observed that in many NCoEs, external lecturers aged between 63 and 70 years had their service contracts extended every six months and continued to be active in service. This situation significantly impacted the learning process of trainees at the National Colleges of Education, yet the ministry did not give proper attention to this matter, the Auditor General has added.
