A team of six Lankan students competed and represented Sri Lanka at the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2025) at Australia’s Sunshine Coast from July 10-22.

The team went through rigorous training and had high hopes of making their mark on the world stage. One team member was successful in gaining a bronze medal at the competition. The team was led by Dr Chanakya Wijerathne and supported by Dr Ashwani Amarasinghe from the University of Peradeniya.

Team member Lasitha Jayasinghe from Kurunegala’s Royal International School was able to achieve a bronze medal at the competition. He was able to answer extremely difficult Math questions.

Team member, Praveen Athauda Arachchi from British School of Colombo was given an honourary call out at the competition for his achievement.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the world’s most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students held annually since 1959. Each country sends up to 6 candidates to solve challenging Mathematical problems in the fields of Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry and Number Theory.

“The IMO is not just about winning medals, it’s about fostering problem solving skills, logical reasoning and creating a passion for mathematics that will benefit these students in any career they pursue,” Dr Chanakya Wijerathne, the CEO of the Sri Lankan Olympiad Mathematics Foundation, said.

The students who immerged victorious from a series of highly competitive national exams were Lasitha Jayasinghe (Royal International School, Kurunegala), Rohan Weerakoon (Badulla Central College), Aditha Herath (Trinity College, Kandy), Janith Dulmina Rajawasala (Ananda College, Colombo), Thenura Dilruk (D S Senanayake College, Colombo) and Praveen Athauda Arachchi (British School of Colombo).

The path to the Olympiad is no easy feat. Selected students first have to compete at the Sri Lankan Mathematics Competition (SLMC) where top performers then advance to the Intermediate Mathematics Competition (SLIMC). The best from this then have to face the Sri Lankan Mathematics Competition (SLMCC) which is then followed by the rigorous IMO Team Selection. Only 6 students are chosen to represent the country at the IMO.

The IMO is a global platform that brings together bright young minds, fostering international collaboration and academic excellence. Many past participants have gone on to become leading mathematicians, scientists and innovators and have contributed to breakthroughs in fields spanning computer science, physics and economics.

A strong performance by Sri Lanka at the IMO could inspire more students to pursue Mathematics; while also strengthening Sri Lanka’s STEM cell research and its standing at international academic circles.

The IMO consists of a format with two 4-5 hour sessions, each with three problems. Each problem is worth 7 points with a maximum of 42 points per students. Gold, Silver and Bronze are awarded based on cut-off scores.

The next IMO will be held in 2026 in Shanghai China. (PW)
