Include labour laws as a subject in new education reforms: CMU

A top trade union this week urged Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya to include labour laws and rights as a subject in the new school curriculum being prepared under new education reforms.

The request has been made by the Ceylon Mercantile, Industrial and General Workers’ Union (CMU), in a recent letter to the PM who is overseeing the new education reforms.

The letter said that the education system should be changed in such a way that the creativity and inventiveness capacity can be developed through research and analysis. There is also ongoing discussion that efficiency and productivity can be increased through the digitalisation of the education and learning system. The time has come to consider not only the choice of subjects but also successful learning methods.

While the awareness of the youth and citizens being created through the current education system is limited, they are also unable to fulfill their responsibilities as conscientious and responsible employees, especially when they enter jobs in private or government institutions.

“On the other hand, they have been forced to work under unfair conditions and be exploited by rulers and employers, taking advantage of their ignorance,” the CMU said.

In the current education system, it has been observed that as the Ordinary Level or Advanced Level approaches, the number of students leaving them to enter industrial jobs has increased significantly, and no meaningful steps have been taken to reduce or limit it. Needless to say, this also applies to students who choose subjects to get higher-paying or income-generating jobs.

“The number of school dropouts has also increased due to the poverty of their families. Due to their poverty and ignorance, they have been forced to live in semi-slavery and work without regard for human dignity or the dignity of a worker. To avoid these situations and pave the way for them to serve and live as true citizens, they must have sufficient knowledge of the legal conditions, rights, practices, and employer-employee relationships related to their jobs,” the letter added.
