Mahanama stun Vidyartha 17-12 in Bowl Segment battle
Mahanama College pulled off a thrilling 17-12 win over Vidyartha College in their Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 Bowl Segment clash played at Nittawela yesterday. The Colombo boys led 14-5 at halftime and held their nerves in the second half to edge out the home side in a close contest.
Mahanama’s points came through two tries a conversion and a penalty. Powerful centre Isuru Akash was the star of the match, scoring both tries with determined runs through the Vidyartha defence. Flyhalf Sithum Ratnayake made no mistake with the boot, adding two accurate conversions. The second half saw Mahanama extend their lead to 17 points through a well-judged penalty kick by Ratnayake.
Vidyartha, fighting hard in front of their home crowd, scored two tries — one in each half. Lock forward Kenula Wijetunga powered over the line in the first half, while the second try came in the dying stages of the game. Fullback Sadev Dilsara converted one of them, but it was not enough to overturn the deficit.
Mahanama’s defence stood strong in the final minutes, shutting down Vidyartha’s last push. It was a match full of physicality, fast ball movement, and tactical kicking. With this gritty win, Mahanama College made a strong comeback in the Bowl Segment, while Vidyartha risk their place in the top league with a possible relegation.
