Sri Lanka and the Maldives to collaborate further in education

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, on his state visit to the Maldives this week, spoke of the strong partnership in education cooperation between the two countries.

“We Sri Lankans have played a key role in supporting Maldivian students and professionals over the years. President Muizzu and I discussed ways and means to further collaborate in this sector,” the president said.

Addressing the Lankan community in the Maldives, he underscored the importance of education for improving the lives of rural people, and said the government plans a major modernisation of the school system.

“Our education system is flawed. Our education is on a single linear path. Education should be open to a wide range of possibilities. We will not allow any child who enters school to leave without a vocational or academic skill. Therefore, we are making a major shift in education for societal change,” he said.
