Peradeniya University grads get into prestigious doctoral programmes abroad
View(s):Thirty-five students from the faculty of Engineering of the University of Peradeniya have gained entry into doctoral programmes of some of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions in the world, the university said.
The success that was achieved can be attributed to the faculty’s research approach, which cultivates hands on experience for the students to excel in competitive PhD applications.
The students selected for the USA will be attending Princeton University, Purdue University, the University of Maryland, the University of Texas at Austin, Virginia Tech, Western Illinois University and the University of Delaware.
Other destinations include the University of Melbourne, Monash University, Queensland University of Technology, the University of Sydney in Australia and the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
The students will leave next week and will attend various orientation programmes until September when the semester starts, depending on the university.
A group of these students served as research assistants at the Multi-Disciplinary AI Research Center (MARC).
The research that will be commenced by the students cover a wide spectrum, including AI and machine learning, signal processing, power electronics, computer architecture, biomedical engineering, geotechnical engineering and nanotechnology. These scientists will contribute significantly to the global academic community while also developing skills and networks that would benefit to Sri Lanka’s technological landscape.
The graduates have all received a full scholarship to these universities that will cover tuition fees, while also providing a stipend for living expenses. (PW)
