APIIT Celebrates its Students’ Achievements at Fourth Award Ceremony for the NCUK International Foundation Year and APIIT Sri Lanka Foundation
View(s):The eagerly awaited Award Ceremony for the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) and APIIT Sri Lanka Foundation Programme was held for the fourth consecutive year on 25th July 2025 at the Monarch Imperial, in a warm and proud celebration of the students who successfully completed their foundation studies in 2024/2025.
The event brought together students, proud parents, and faculty to mark this important academic and personal milestone. The ceremony was graced by Ms. Fiona Knight, Academic Link Tutor and Senior Lecturer at University of Staffordshire, UK, who attended as the Chief Guest, adding distinction to the occasion.
APIIT Sri Lanka offers two distinct foundation pathways to meet the diverse aspirations of students. The APIIT Sri Lanka Foundation Programme, offered in three streams – Business, Computing, and Law – is designed for students who wish to progress directly into undergraduate degree programmes awarded by the University of Staffordshire, UK. The curriculum has been carefully developed to meet the university’s academic requirements, while nurturing the skills necessary for university-level success.
The NCUK International Foundation Year, introduced at APIIT in 2021, is a globally recognised qualification, officially verified by UK ENIC (UK Government recognition service) as being an equivalent to GCE A-Levels in the UK. It provides students with a flexible academic route to 60+ universities across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Malaysia, and Vietnam, covering a wide range of degree options in disciplines such as Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Biosciences, Law, and the Social Sciences. APIIT is the only institution in Sri Lanka currently delivering the NCUK IFY through its Colombo and Kandy Campuses.
Both programmes are designed for students with GCE O/Level or limited A/Level qualifications, offering them structured and supportive routes into undergraduate study. The APIIT Foundation curriculum is tailored to meet the entry requirements of the University of Staffordshire degrees, while the NCUK IFY curriculum, developed in collaboration with NCUK’s network of partner universities, places a strong emphasis on preparing students for the academic, cultural, and linguistic demands of global university study. These foundation pathways increase access to higher education for young learners and play an increasingly important role in preparing the next generation for degree level study.
This year’s Foundation Awards Ceremony came at a particularly proud moment for APIIT Sri Lanka, as its students once again achieved global recognition at the NCUK Academic Prize Awards in the UK. Among over 4,300 students across five continents who completed NCUK pathway programmes in the 2023/24 academic year, four students from APIIT – Damiru Vidunitha Wanniarachchi, Sadew Chandupa Thanapathy, Wanniarachchi Kankanamge Deelaka Wickramasinghe, and Insaf Ahamath Abdul Majeethu – were honoured with the Recognised Achiever Award, placing them among the top-performing NCUK IFY students in South Asia. Their success reflects both their individual academic excellence and the strong foundation provided by APIIT’s learning environment.
Throughout the evening, representatives of both APIIT Sri Lanka and University of Staffordshire addressed the graduating class, offering words of encouragement as the students take the next step in their educational journey. The event served not only as a recognition of past achievements but also as a symbolic gateway into the next phase of their academic journey.
The ceremony also marked another milestone in APIIT Sri Lanka’s 25-year contribution to higher education. With a student population of over 3,000, and an annual intake exceeding 1,000 students, APIIT continues to be one of the largest providers of British undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Sri Lanka. Its growing footprint in pre-university education through the School of Foundation Studies reflects APIIT’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education and nurturing confident, future-ready, and globally competent graduates.
As the Fourth Award Ceremony came to a close, it stood not just as a recognition of academic success, but as a reaffirmation of APIIT’s enduring purpose – to inspire a love for learning to nurture leaders who uplift lives.
