Two police sergeants and two civilians remanded for killing pregnant deer

Two Police Sergeants and two civilians involved in slaughtering a pregnant deer in Galkiriyagama were remanded until August 1, after they were produced before Dambulla Magistrate Court yesterday.
Acting Magistrate Dulanjali Sithumini ordered the police to remand the suspects. However, police said that as one suspect was unwell, they had admitted him to Dambulla hospital.
The three 12 bore guns which were used to kill the pregnant deer was produced to the court by Dambulla Assistant Superintendent of police.

The two civilians were charged with slaughtering the deer and illegally possessing firearms while the two police officers were charged on aiding and abetting offences.
The two sergeants and one civilian had shot the deer and were trying to take away the carcass, but villagers who had woken up around 3.00 a.m. after hearing the sounds of gunfire had carried out a search and found the suspects. The suspects were bound to a tree by villagers who alerted both police and wildlife officers.
Both Wildlife officials and policemen who arrived at the scene were involved in a heated exchange of words as the Wildlife officials and villagers wanted the police to arrest the three suspects.
The three suspects were arrested by Makulugama police on Friday, and another civilian was arrested yesterday.
The two police sergeants were from the Giranegama and Madatugama Police stations.
