49th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka takes oath today

Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court (SC), will take oaths today as the 49th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

A ceremonial sitting to mark the occasion will be held on Thursday (July 31) morning at the SC.

Justice Surasena obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1985 before entering Sri Lanka Law College. He took oaths as an Attorney-at-Law in 1989 and began his legal career as a State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Department.

He was appointed as a High Court Judge in 2007 and was elevated to the Court of Appeal on January 20, 2016. He served as President of the Court of Appeal from January 15, 2018, until his appointment to the Supreme Court on January 9, 2019.

Justice Surasena has presided over several high-profile cases during his judicial career.
