Sri Lanka aiming to attract more MICE traffic
View(s):Sri Lanka is aiming to increase its MICE travel segment to 20-25 per cent of the total tourist arrivals from a current 12 per cent through focused promotions and an upcoming MICE fair, Tourism Deputy Minister Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe said on Wednesday.
Speaking at the media briefing to promote the country’s MICE Expo on September 22-26, he said there is a huge potential to increase business visitors and Sri Lanka should make use of this opportunity.
The Expo, the fifth edition since 2021, is expected to attract 100 foreign buyers and 15 journalists from India, China, Pakistan, Germany, Russia, France, the UK, Turkey, Spain, the UAE, Bangladesh, Qatar, Malaysia and Singapore. The five-day programme will include B2B meetings between buyers and local MICE vendors and a familiarization tour covered tourist spots in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy in the central hills.
Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) Chairman Dheera Hettiarachchi said they wanted to bring a major transformation in the industry and attract more MICE visitors.
SLCB officials said they have so far facilitated 30 corporate and business gatherings, attracting groups of 200-300 visitors while there are confirmed bookings for another 25 to 30 travel groups on business and conference travel.
