HUTCH, as part of the ongoing Future Connect Programme in collaboration with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJP), hosted a group of undergraduate students for a comprehensive industry visit to its Engineering Complex (Data Centre) in Walpola, Ragama recently.

During the visit, undergraduates from the Faculty of Computing, USJP were given hands-on exposure to the core technical infrastructure of a leading telecom provider. They explored critical operational areas including towers, equipment and grounding systems, Data Centre environmental control and access control and the functions of the Network Operations Centre, the company said in a media release.

The programme was designed to help students connect their academic knowledge to practical engineering processes. It also covered emerging technology topics such as 5G, IoT integration, and the support systems required to implement these innovations at scale.

Speaking on behalf of HUTCH, Mangala Bandara, General Manager – Corporate Affairs, stated, “At HUTCH, we are committed to empowering the next generation of tech professionals by providing meaningful exposure and hands-on experience. This programme offered more than just a site visit; it gave students the opportunity to see first-hand how skilled engineering teams manage and maintain real-world telecom infrastructure.”

Dr. D. G. N. D. Jayarathna, Head / Department of Scientific Computing, Faculty of Computing, USJ, added, “We appreciate HUTCH’s consistent efforts in supporting academia through initiatives like Future Connect. Experiences like this help our students contextualise their classroom learning, understand the scope of the telecom industry, and engage meaningfully with current and emerging technologies.”
