Battery energy systems in 16 locations
View(s):The Ministry of Power has got Cabinet approval to set up 160 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage systems in 16 identified locations around the country.
Ministry officials told The Sunday Times Business that after completion, this system will be integrated with the Ceylon Electricity Board. They also said that the ministry is now preparing the bidding documents for the storage system.
The energy demand is projected to double by the end of this decade in the Asia Pacific region, analysts say. To meet this demand, solar power and green hydrogen have emerged as potential energy sources. Sri Lanka’s green hydrogen road map has identified road transportation, bunkering, ceramics and glass manufacturing, etc, to be introduced as pilot projects. For green hydrogen utilisation, the ministry official said that the aim is to develop a local manufacturing ecosystem to produce components such as electrolysis and support green hydrogen ambitions. Sri Lanka has also set an ambitious target of establishing 30 GB of electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen production in the next 25 years.
Officials also said that the Asian Development Bank has approved a US$2 million loan to enhance and modernise medium voltage distribution networks in the country. The integrated transmission plan for the country will be at a cost of $10 million, they added.
