Edward Brion, a product of St. Benedict’s College, brought honour to Sri Lanka by securing the gold medal in the Senior Individual Kata event at the 9th South Asian Karate Championship, held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo.
Displaying precision, power, and masterful technique, Brion triumphed over Bangladesh in the semi-finals and went on to defeat Nepal in the finals, marking a memorable victory for the host nation. The championship, which gathered elite karatekas from across South Asia, was a highly anticipated event, and Brion’s gold medal win has been hailed as a major highlight for Sri Lanka.
Speaking after his victory, Brion expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported his journey. “This win is not just mine, it belongs to everyone who stood behind me,” he said, extending special thanks to the Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Karate Do Federation, the Ministry of Sports, his loving parents, and his personal coach and father, Sensei R.J. Edward.
Edward Brion now sets his sights on the international stage, with a clear goal in mind to win a medal at the upcoming Asian Games. The path he follows holds deep personal meaning; his father, Sensei R.J. Edward, made history as Sri Lanka’s first-ever Asian Games medalist in karate, claiming a bronze medal in Busan, Korea in 2002. Brion hopes to continue that legacy, this time aiming even higher.
As the nation celebrates this outstanding achievement, all eyes will now be on Edward Brion as he prepares to represent Sri Lanka on the continental stage inspired by his heritage, driven by purpose, and powered by a nation’s pride.
