Segar’s works under the hammer
View(s):Veteran artist Segar held a private showing of his works in Mumbai, India in January this year and since has been invited to exhibit in four other Indian cities – Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai in September, October, November and December respectively.
His reputation is also growing. Two of Segar’s paintings are in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, which has greatly heartened the artist. “It’s unbelievable. A small artist from a small country getting a permanent place in a big gallery of a big country like Australia,” he enthuses.
“I had an exhibition in Melbourne following an invitation from my friend Ajith Jayathilake in 2022. For my luck, the Asian art curator of National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Wayne Crothers too came for the exhibition. Mr Crothers felt Australia needs Sri Lankan paintings for its national gallery. Entire credit goes to my life long friend Ajith Jayathilake,” Segar says of that honour.
Having sold several of his old paintings through leading auctioneer Schokman Samerawickreme, he is planning to sell 20 of the paintings featured in his book ‘Dialogue with Darkness’ through the same auctioneer on July 3 at ITC Hotel Colombo.
