A divine dance in an apt setting
View(s):The recent dance performance Devamala by ‘Natyapoorna’ Dr. Nirmala John of Nirmalanjali Academy was held at Barefoot on June 14. Organised in collaboration with Barefoot and a few generous patrons, this event brought together a diverse audience, including many non-Tamil attendees and Barefoot regulars, who responded warmly to a performance rooted largely in Tamil culture.
Devamala, meaning “a garland of deities,” was a vibrant and thoughtful tribute to the divine figures of the Indian tradition, presented through a series of classical and folk dances. The programme featured a rich variety of items: a Maha Ganapathim anjali, Isanya kauvthuvam, devotional kavadi folk dance, an elegant snake dance, a powerful goddess item, Ayi Giri Nandini, and more, ending with a brilliant thillana.

A rich and varied programme: Young dancers in Devamala
The Barefoot garden is a place of beauty, and the performance took place amidst lamps, strings of jasmine and fragrant scents of incense, evoking a sacred and special atmosphere. The late Barbara Sansoni, its founder, taught us to see colour in new ways through her extraordinary handloom fabrics. To the audience’s delight, the cast of Devamala appeared on stage dressed in Barefoot cottons and silks of rich red, blue, yellow, and green—jewel tones that echoed Barbara’s vision—beneath a moody June sky that held off its rain just long enough for the show to proceed without pause.
The choreography, by Dr. Nirmala, beautifully blended classical Bharatanatyam with Tamil folk traditions, and was both precise and expressive. Her presentation stood out for its expression and grace, and it was a genuine pleasure to watch.
Vocalist Dr. Aruran Arunathy rendered the compositions with his characteristically rich voice and impeccable delivery. He was ably supported by Dr. Thivyarupa Sarma on the mridangam, and Vidwaan Velavadeepan, whose instrumental accompaniments added further depth and quality to the musical experience.
Notably, the costumes were made from artisan handloom fabrics by Barefoot, adding a unique visual identity rooted in local craft. It was a well-curated and memorable performance. Congratulations to Dr Nirmala and the entire team for this meaningful offering.
