Gov to equip Uva Wellassa Medicine Faculty
View(s):The Faculty of Medicine at Uva Wellassa University, established under the 2023 national budget proposal, has officially commenced operations with the enrolment of its first batch of 80 students.
Despite this, the faculty is grappling with serious infrastructure challenges that have raised concerns.
In an effort to kick start the academic programme, the university repurposed existing buildings and utilised the Rs 200 million allocated for 2023 to launch the first and second academic years.
While students are currently attending lectures and practical sessions, the absence of purpose built lecture halls, administrative offices, and dedicated preclinical facilities has hindered the faculty’s smooth operation.
The estimated cost to construct the required preclinical and administrative buildings, including modern lecture halls, stands at Rs 2,149 million rupees.
In response, the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved a proposal to address the shortfall.
Under the approved plan, procurement activities will begin within the year. The government has committed to provide the necessary funding over the 2026 to 2028 budget cycle to ensure that the Faculty of Medicine is fully equipped.
