It was her unbounded love for nature and this land that led Iranganie Serasinghe together with a few visionaries to start Ruk Rakaganno – the tree society of Sri Lanka all of 50 years ago, at a time when conservation was little considered.
On June 5, World Environment Day, just a few days ahead of her 98th birthday which falls on June 9, the legendary actress of stage and screen, still radiating serenity and grace, made her way to the Barefoot to be part of an evening celebrating Ruk Raks’ 50th anniversary.
The evening highlighted the society’s continuing efforts towards conservation over the years and the stalwarts such as Lyn de Alwis, Dr. C.R. Panabokke, Dr. T.S.U. de Zylva, Laki Senanayake, Nirmala de Mel and Kamini Vitharna among others who had given so much to the cause, but it was as much a loving tribute to Iranganie, their founder and patron whose abiding passion for Sri Lanka’s natural heritage continues to guide and inspire them.
