View(s):Proper planning essential to avert shortages
For us Sri Lankans, salt consumption has been connected to our food since ancient times. Since salt used to be available at a very affordable price, it did not significantly impact people’s consumption.
However, in recent times, there has been a shortage of salt, which has now reached a stage that cannot be resolved in the immediate future, other than by importing salt from other countries. The main reason cited for this is the continuous rainfall since last year, which disrupted salt production, making it impossible to meet the current demand.
In reality, what happened cannot be separated from the lack of prior preparation. Attention should be paid to sudden climate changes and appropriate responses should be implemented.
The lack of long-term planning in many industries in our country is not a new issue. Planning is only considered once the problem has escalated. If there had been a timely plan in place, this issue could have been resolved quickly and in a more manageable way.

Hangman, we need you
My dear Hangman, where are you?
Your absence from duty these days has resulted in our country being turned into a land of hired killers. The value of human life has gone down to such a drastic level, that to relieve a person of his life, the cost would be a few hundred thousand rupees. Killers seem available for those who need their services.
Even if caught and convicted, the killer could freely walk the streets after serving his jail term. Had you been on duty, my dear Hangman, you would have carried out to the letter the death sentence passed. After all the punishment for the crime could be justifiably be equal to the crime itself and a deterrent for others.
In the days of old we have heard of many so-called “fearless” murderers who fainted when you led them to the gallows. Rather late, they realized the value of life.
Very unfortunately, we ourselves sent you on compulsory leave. When things were getting pretty bad, you were to be recalled, with even a “rope” purchased for your work. That too failed. Had it not been so “pathalaya” would have been only a word in the books, preventing an innocent pillion rider getting a bullet through his head
Considering all this, my dear “Hangman”, my mind keeps debating whether to call those who objected to your return, heroes or hypocrites.
