New leadership appointed to Independent Teachers Union of Eastern University (iTUEU)

The annual general meeting of the Independent Teachers’ Union of Eastern University (iTUEU), Eastern University, Sri Lanka, was held last Saturday, and a new executive committee for 2025/26 was appointed. Acting Vice Chancellor Prof F C Ragel was chief guest. The AGM marked a significant step in reaffirming the union’s commitment to academic excellence, staff welfare, and community development.

University Librarian Dr W J Jeyaraj, was unanimously elected president. Joining him in key leadership roles are Professor in Medicine K T Sundaresan as secretary, and Professor in Economics T Bhavan as treasurer.

Senior Lecturer in Political Science C Sivanayagam was appointed vice president, while Senior Lecturer in English Dr S Umashankar assumed office as assistant secretary. The role of editor was entrusted to Senior Lecturer in Linguistics Dr Niruba Sarath Jayasundara.

Other members elected to the executive committee were Professor in Physics P Peretheepan, Senior Lecturer in Siddha Pharmacology Dr N Varnakulendran, Senior Lecturer in Management Dr P Pratheepa, and Senior Lecturer in Comparative Religion & Social Harmony K Mathiseelan, all of whom bring a wide range of academic expertise and experience to the union’s leadership team.

Ex-officio members include Senior Lecturer in Management V Rosana Ragel, who served as the immediate past president, and Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Anthropology R Vickneswaran, the immediate past secretary.

While the general body emphasised its ongoing commitment to protecting the rights and wellbeing of its members, it also unanimously resolved to take proactive steps toward uplifting the struggling state of education in vulnerable communities surrounding the Eastern University, Sri Lanka. The newly elected leadership pledged to initiate collaborative outreach and educational support programmes aimed at fostering sustainable and inclusive development in the region.
