IChemC Open Day on May 24: Explore a Future in Chemistry
View(s):Students passionate about science and looking to pursue a career in chemistry after A/Ls are invited to discover exciting opportunities at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC). The Institute will host its Open Day on Saturday, 24th May 2025 at 10:00 AM at Adamantane House, 341/22 Kotte Road, Rajagiriya.
Chemistry is a vital science that supports advances in areas such as renewable materials, sustainable technology, alternative energy, agriculture, food science, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology, and nuclear innovation. A chemistry education opens doors to diverse and impactful careers across both academia and industry.
The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, established by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1972, is a premier institution for chemical science education in Sri Lanka. With a legacy dating back to 1941, IChemC has long upheld a reputation for academic excellence and scientific leadership. The Institute’s mission is to advance the frontiers of chemistry through quality teaching and research, while producing graduates equipped to meet global challenges.
IChemC offers a range of academic programmes suited to aspiring chemists. The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemical Science is a comprehensive four-year full-time degree programme aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) and accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK). It offers strong theoretical grounding and practical experience to prepare students for careers in research, industry, or further study.
Another flagship programme is the Graduateship in Chemistry (GIC)—a four-year professional qualification that has been recognised for nearly five decades. Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the GIC is a respected alternative to a traditional science degree and highly valued in both employment and postgraduate education contexts.
In addition, IChemC offers a two-year Diploma in Laboratory Technology, which provides practical training for students aiming to enter technical or laboratory-based professions.
All programmes include core and advanced coursework in organic, physical, inorganic, analytical, and biological chemistry. Students also benefit from research projects, internships, and industry-focused modules. A unique feature of the curriculum is the integration of management skills, preparing graduates for leadership roles in scientific settings.
IChemC takes pride in its expert faculty, composed of seasoned academics and professionals dedicated to student success. Financial support is also available, with a variety of scholarships and assistance schemes offered, including merit-based awards, aid for underprivileged students, and sports scholarships.
The Open Day will give prospective students and parents the chance to meet faculty members, alumni, and current students; learn more about the academic offerings; and tour the facilities. Visitors can also receive guidance on admissions, career prospects, and life at the Institute.
