Labour Tribunal orders SLC to compensate former employee
The Colombo Labour Tribunal has ordered Sri Lanka Cricket to compensate a former employee who successfully challenged her unlawful dismissal as a confidential secretary of the country’s premier sports body in 2016.
Gayathri Wickremasinghe, who was working as a Confidential Secretary to the Head of Marketing at the time of her termination in 2016, filed action in the Labour Tribunal seeking justice. The order was delivered by Judge W.U.C. Herath following a seven-year legal proceeding.
The charges levelled by SLC in the show cause letter issued on May 3, 2016, included absence without leave, tardiness, personal grooming activities in the office (brushing hair, applying make-up, and painting nails), talking too loudly on the phone, and disrespecting the national anthem.
After examining written submissions from both parties, the judge concluded that Wickremasinghe had been subjected to an unjustified termination and ordered SLC to provide compensation.
Attorney-at-Law Chanaka Jayamaha represented the complainant, while Attorney-at-Law Tyronne Weerakkody appeared for Sri Lanka Cricket.
