At least 26 countries are in various stages of adopting the Modular Open-Source Identity Platform (MOSIP), inspired by India’s Aadhaar system, a top official said.

“Most of these countries are from the global South. Countries in Africa, Latin America, along with Southeast Asia and Asia, are adopting the MOSIP system,” Rohit Ranjan Rai, Senior Associate, MOSIP, told The Sunday Times Business on Monday. He added that Togo has completed a pilot launch of their Digital ID through the MOSIP platform. He said that about 10 countries from the global South – essentially from Africa, Latin America, South East Asia and South Asia regions are in the process of rolling out their national ID systems on the MOSIP platform, and another 16 are in various stages of piloting the MOSIP platform.

NID-TOGO, IDEMIA, and Atos are collaborating to implement MOSIP, which uses Iris, face, and fingerprint recognition. Togo successfully piloted the system, aligning with the government’s 2020-2025 roadmap. MOSIP provides technical support and capacity building for Togo’s adoption. The project is part of a growing number of countries using MOSIP for national digital ID systems. Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Niger, Uganda, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, and Madagascar are also in the process of adopting MOSIP, Mr. Rai added.

MOSIP was started in 2018 at the International Institute for Information Technology, Bangalore.

The core modules of the secure MOSIP deployment include pre-registration, registration client, registration processor, ID repository, ID authentication, and resident services. Pre-registration allows individuals to input demographic details, upload documents, book appointments, and receive notifications. Registration client captures and packages demographic and biometric information, while the registration processor analyses data to generate unique identification numbers. The ID repository provides an API for other modules, while ID authentication offers API-based authentication using one-time password (OTP) and static pin-based methods. Resident services offer self-service options for residents.
