The Eluwankulama wildlife office raided a large-scale illegal logging racket inside the buffer zone of the Wilpattu National Park on Wednesday, confiscating nearly Rs. 1mn worth of timber.

Among the haul were weera, palu, mahogany and halmilla trees, an official said, adding that an informant had said the racket was taking place over a period of time.

The trees had been cut down and transported from the national park and adjoining land belonging to a cement factory. Wildlife officers said the suspects had moved the timber into an area called “Gange-Wadiya” in the buffer zone. There, they used mechanical saws to cut the wood into smaller logs.

The officers expressed surprise that the Navy camp at Gange-Wadiya, which they claimed was just 50m from the location, had not detected the racket earlier.

The main suspect, a resident of Gange-Wadiya village was arrested.
