GMOA discusses tax relief for doctors among other issues with Health Minister
View(s):The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has requested the newly appointed Health Minister, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, to urgently look into providing tax relief to doctors.
The GMOA made the request when the minister met with representatives of medical associations yesterday.
GMOA Spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said executive committee members took part in the meeting with the Health Minister, Deputy Minister, and high-ranking health ministry officials to discuss issues within the health sector.
Dr. Wijesinghe added that they also discussed the lack of human resources in the medical sector, as most consultants and medical officers have gone abroad for financial reasons.
He said the government should set up a mechanism to spark interest among doctors to practice within the country. This should include setting up short, mid and long-term plans to improve doctors’ financial issues.
Additionally, the lack of medical equipment and issues regarding drugs and medical education were also discussed.
Dr. Wijesinghe said the Health Minister had responded positively, agreeing to prioritise matters that could be immediately addressed and provide relief through the upcoming budget.
The minister had also added that as the government had reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF, they are currently discussing an amendment to the payee tax scheme.
