A free night school programme set up to help students of  the Welimada educational zone is being carried out at the Yahala Arawa Maha Vidyalaya, in Uwa Paranagama.

The school’s principal, Rohana Bandara, told the Sunday Times that the initiative started over a year ago to help improve the quality of education for underprivileged students at the school.

He said a majority of the people in the area were farmers and labourers, therefore, the free night education programme was set up to help students at the school.

He said students of the Yahala Arawa Maha Vidyalaya and students who are nearby could take part in the night school.

The principal said teachers would go home after their regular school hours and then return to teach these students from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

He said the teachers are doing this on a voluntary basis, and they have observed that the students’ interest in studies has increased as a result of the programme.

Mr. Bandara said that he too is involved in the night classes and expressed gratitude to the teachers of the school who take part in the programme.

A mathematics teacher of the school  who is also involved in the night school, Indika Madusanka, said that parents hand over their children around 5.45 p.m. and return to the school around 9.45 p.m. He said they hand the students back after confirming the identity of the parents and obtaining their signatures.

A parent of a student who attends these classes, Priyanka Dharshani, said that they do not need to send their children to tuition classes in the town.  She welcomed the school’s initiative and pointed out that the teachers are engaging in the programme with few facilities.

A student  who attends the night school classes, Jayanthi Charithma, said the teachers of her school teach during the school hours and even at night without an extra charge.

She added that the teachers have even assured their safety. She said it would be helpful if the teachers had a multimedia projector.

“ It is difficult to study during the day due to the heat, and we find it easier to study at night,” she said.
