Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka message

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka in a message to mark this year’s Easter Sunday said celebrations are being held at a point where the country is at a decisive juncture socially, economically and politically.

“If we need to find sustainable solutions to hardships which the people are suffering from, there should be a solid change of the governing system. Working towards that is a responsibility of everyone,” the message said.

“The 2019 Easter Sunday bomblasts, which killed 273 persons and injured 500 persons in Catholic Churches and other places, completed five year anniversary today. Even though five years have passed we are still unaware of the truth despite the government appointing numerous committees to investigate persons who are behind the attack. Therefore they are waiting until justice is served for victims,” the message said.

He pointed out that as a diverse society, fostering unity is paramount.

“Let us join hands as Sri Lankans, dedicating ourselves to the country’s security, peace and development while guarding against divisive agendas.”

Mr Wickremesinghe also pointed out that people should commemorate Easter with reverence, remembering the tragic events of the past perpetrated by extremists. He assured that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring national security, preventing such tragedies from recurring.
