Sri Lanka lasses emerge champions, Iran clinch boys’ title

The curtains of the Billy Jean King Cup for girls and the Junior Davis Cup for boys came down with the two finals of the two categories worked off at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday with Sri Lanka emerging girls’ champions by defeating Kyrgyzstan while Iran prevailed over Jordan by 2-1.

Ivanka Samarasinghe and Dinara de Silva coasted to easy wins in the Singles by the identical winning margins, 2-0, and the Doubles was not played as the two wins for Sri Lanka was sufficient to emerge champions.

In the boys’ final it was a tense battle between Iran and Jordan with the two teams sharing the Singles with one win each before Iran pulled off an easy 2-0 win in the Doubles event.

The two champion teams will now contest in the final qualifying round in Kazakhstan from May 13 to 17.

Singles: Sam Attaran (Iran) beat Amir Jaber (Jordan) 2-1 (2/6, 6/0, 6/2); Malek Alqurneh (Jordan) beat Airik Aberdeen (Iran) 2-0 (6/2, 6/2)

Doubles: Sam Attaran/Mehrad Mansouria (Iran) beat Malek Alqurneh/Amir Jaber (Jordan) 2-0 (6/3, 6/2)
