Left-arm spinner Mevan Dissanayake helped St. Benedict’s College pull off a 46-run win over traditional rivals Wesley College in their annual James Cartman Trophy encounter concluded at the P. Sara Oval yesterday.

Dissanayake concluded with an impressive match haul of 9 for 69, leading St. Benedict’s to their first outright win since the inception of the James Cartman Trophy three years ago. The match was notably low scoring, with no batsmen from either side managing to reach a half century. The highest individual score was 42 by Steve Arshan of St. Benedict’s.

On the second day, Wesley declared at their overnight total of 122 for 8 in response to Bens’ 150. St. Benedict’s struggled in their second innings, losing their top five wickets with only 38 runs on the board. However, they managed to recover with brief partnerships, reaching a total of 110 runs.

Chasing a modest target of 139 runs for victory, Wesley found themselves in trouble at 47 for 5 and failed to recover as Dissanayake and left-arm spinner Vihanga Ratnayake dismantled Wesley’s lower-order batting, dismissing them for just 92 runs.
