Mindanao quake and tsunami: No impact on Lanka

The earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 that struck yesterday off the coast of the southern Philippines island of Mindanao had no impact on Sri Lanka, the Disaster Management Centre in Colombo said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said last night that based on the magnitude and location, it expected tsunami waves to hit the southern Philippines and parts of Indonesia, Palau, and Malaysia.

In addition, tsunami warnings were issued for regions in the west Pacific, including the Philippines, the coast of Japan, and parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, after the earthquake at 10.37 p.m. Philippine time.
